Our largest wedding to date began on the Seaview seafront, where guests who had crossed from the mainland and taken over the village climbed aboard a vintage open-top Southern Vectis double-decker in cream and racing green. At St Olave's Church a hessian runner led between pews banked with delphinium, ammi, scabious and feverfew, and the old stone porch all but vanished beneath a tumbling arch of wild garden flowers. Cesca wore a sleek satin column gown with a softly cuffed off-the-shoulder neckline and a cathedral-length veil, her bridesmaids in mismatched slips of powder blue, sage and buttermilk.
At Gatcombe Estate, not one but two tents rose beside the ivy-clad Georgian house, one for dining and one for dancing, with a smaller third set aside as a boudoir. Drinks were poured at a panelled white bar against towering beech hedges, while blue umbrellas printed with the couple's crab monogram kept off the blazing sun.
The same soft blues, yellows and wild florals flowed on into the dining tent, hanging in rings of foliage and ox-eye daisies above white-linen tables of bud vases, pale blue tapers and crab-stamped napkins tied in ric-rac. Next door, navy blackout lining shut out the summer sun and turned the party tent into a nightclub of disco balls, coloured light and cowboy hats, with Cesca and Seb hoisted high above the dancefloor.
